As our children return to Madrasah after the Eid break, perhaps there is one important question every parent should ask themselves:
Why am I sending my child to Madrasah?
At first glance, the answer may seem obvious. Yet if we reflect deeply, our answer reveals our intention, and intentions have a profound impact on outcomes.
There is a famous story about a king who was once given a glass of fresh pomegranate juice by a farmer. The king was amazed by its sweetness and asked, "How many pomegranates did it take to make this glass?"
"Only half a pomegranate," replied the farmer.
The king was astonished. In his heart, however, a thought entered his mind: These people must be prospering. Perhaps I should increase their taxes.
A short while later, he asked for another glass. This time, the farmer had to squeeze two or three pomegranates to fill the same cup.
Surprised, the king asked, "What has happened?"
The farmer replied, "It seems our king's intention has changed."
The story reminds us of a powerful lesson: when intentions are right, blessings follow. When intentions become distorted, the fruits are affected.
The same can be said about Madrasah.
If we send our children simply because everyone else does, we also went as children, or because it is part of our culture, because we want them to complete the Qur'an, or merely because it fills a few hours of their week, then we may be missing the true purpose.
The real purpose of Madrasah is much greater.
We send our children so that they come to know Allah as their Creator, Sustainer and Lord. We send them so that their Iman grows stronger, their love for Allah increases and they learn to turn to Him throughout their lives.
We send them so that they develop a deep connection with Rasulullah ﷺ, confidence in his teachings and a love for following his beautiful example.
We send them so that the Deen becomes the lens through which they view life, and so that the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah are not seen as something secondary, but as the foundation upon which everything else is built.
Ultimately, we are not simply hoping to produce children who can recite the Quran. We are hoping to nurture strong and confident believers.
Children whose hearts are content with the Deen of Allah.
Children who pray, who make good choices, who possess strong character, and who carry their Deen with them long after they leave the classroom. These results do not appear overnight. They take years of effort, patience and partnership between parents and teachers.
But every journey begins with a sincere intention.
So as your child returns to Madrasah this week, take a moment to ask yourself:
Why am I sending my child to Madrasah?
Then renew your intention for the sake of Allah.
InshaAllah, when the intention is right, the fruits will follow.
